Childhood's Sweet Nothings

Cloud 9
Sampalok
Nissin Butter Coconut
Chocolate Mallows
Air Heads

These are just some goodies that reminded me so much of my  childhood. I must admit, I still carry a lot of my younger years with me, even up to now. Well, when it's really your favorite, nothing can stop a person from having these simple joys.
A logo of a certain product may also be in the simplest form, it's how the product is being sold to the public. Of course the taste of these childhood sweet nothings already made a mark on my palette. I do crave for them. Logo Design Tips played a major role on creating these products too. Because one of the things that excites me the most is the part  when among the packs of goodies and local products on a shelf I'm looking at, suddenly, a familiar logo surprises me, it's my all-time childhood favorite, a refreshment of what made up my past and will surely continue to endear the present....

Another sweet moment waiting... it's sharing those same sweet memories with my husband and introducing a part of my life to my child.

My Mango Float To The Next Level

Of all the Mango floats I've made this was the first time that I was able to get a slice where everything was still intact. I would often encounter bits and pieces of mango or graham crackers falling off. The nice part about this week's Mango Float making, was the fact that I didn't even use too much cream to hold it, but it turned out exactly how I wanted it.

Mango Float is one of the easiest desserts to make. We can all do it we even add a little something-something to make it our own. As for me, I always make mine sugar free. As much as possible, I always try recipes that doesn't require too much sugar or no sugar at all and even no use of sweeteners.

I let the natural flavor of the ripe mangoes combined with the sweet flavor of the graham crackers do the job. But make sure that your mangoes are ripe enough, if not, it's advisable to use sugar. On my next float adventure, I will be adding another ingredient, and of course, lots of cream to make it look more enticing.

Becky's Kitchen--- Swiss Chocolate Cake

I'm so glad that my brother lives near Becky's, anytime we want to get a taste of their goodies, we're just a call away. One of the delights I like from Becky's are their cakes. If you're seeking for the taste of a traditional cake, Becky's has it. As you enter their bakeshop, it will remind you of your grandmother's kitchen with the sweet smelling aroma of cakes and pastries in the oven. And howard miller grandfather clocks would fit the whole setting.

For my Dad's birthday, we requested for a Swiss Chocolate Cake

It was very delicious. I like the plain old white frosting. Made me wonder so much on what's on the inside. In every slice a toffee-caramel like candy comes with it.  Reminds me of a local candy called tira-tira. Only, the one that goes with the cake is chewable. Another favorite of mine is Becky's Chocolate Fudge Cake and the Black Forest Cake.

Kababayan With A Twist

Kababayan is a Filipino pastry bought from any local bakery in the Philippines. I grew up with this muffin. It is actually an all- time favorite of mine. I love it snack time late in the afternoon or early in the morning.

According to foodmood.over-blog.net, Kababayan means “Fellow Countryman”. This is a rich and creamy muffin which is usually shaped like Mexican Sombreros.

The Kababayan I found last Sunday over at SM Tiendesitas has blueberries. Same old tasting Kababayan, only it has blueberry to make it yummier. Sold for Php10.50 each.

Wednesday Fresh Mango Milkshake

Here's my plan, everyday or at least in a week my goal is to prepare cold fresh fruit juices. It will depend on what fruit is available. So far, I already have some mangoes and watermelon waiting to be transformed ;)

Aside from water, I try my best to serve my family fresh juices all the time. One of the advantages of a tropical country is having almost all kinds of fruits all year round.

The ingredients are easy to find and the drink itself is easy to prepare.
  • 1 Cup Ripe Mangoes
  • 1 Cup Fresh Milk
  • 1 Cup Vanilla Ice Cream
  • 1/2 Cup Sugar
  • Ice cubes
  • Heavy Duty Blender
Just blend everything together.

    Food Trip Friday--- Homemade Turon

Turon or fried caramelized banana. Banana wrapped in spring roll wrappers.
    Recipe Here
I prefer making Turon with white sugar. I coat the banana itself with sugar before wrapping it. Then, I will coat the whole wrapped banana again. I don't deep-fry my turon, I pan-fry them. That way, I have control on caramelizing the sugar. I would often buy Turon coated with burnt sugar and the taste is awful. And I also like making small, bite- size Turons.

It's a cake package made out of Beautiful sugar roses and creamy Hershey's Milk Chocolate Kisses top this pound cake with chocolate chip filling.

    Lechen Flan

Flan, Leche Flan or Caramel Custard
I really wanted to try to make my own so I can serve something new from my kitchen on my husband's birthday this week. They say it's easy... I went surfing online last week to find back- up recipes for my first take. The method and preparation of the recipes I found are all the same. It's the quantity for every recipe and the style that made a difference. Some like it without the egg whites, others prefer using the whites. Anyway, me being a practical person, I included the egg whites. You just have to whisk it until the mixture is well-blended.

I also used brown sugar for the custard base. It tasted the same and I got similar results if I used white sugar. Leche Flan is usually steamed over an open flame or stove top, it can also be seen baked.

    Red Ribbon's White Forest Cake

It has been a regular for the family to buy Red Ribbon cakes. The thing I love about their cakes are the distinct flavors they give.
Red Ribbon Has Always Been Part Of Our Family...
Something WHITE was officially launched today. I am very proud to become part of this event. White chocolate, white chiffon, and long- stem maraschino cherries. Combined that will surely give delight on your first bite. The luscious taste from every slice and the inviting look of the cake itself.

Introducing, Red Ribbon's New White Forest Cake!!!
    Regular (P560), Junior (P335)
Visit any Red Ribbon Branch or call 8-77-77 and have it delivered!

This new yummy goodness was greatly influenced by Red Ribbon's Black Forest cake. Black Forest has been one of Red Ribbon's signature cake. It captures our hearts all the time. With this, Red Ribbon launched the very first White Forest cake in the Philippines.
It is made with creamy white chocolate and light, moist chiffon cake layered with real cherry bits and a fusion of white chocolate flakes.
I love it! The chiffon was very soft, not too sweet that you will appreciate the twist of the cherry filling. The long- stemmed Maraschino cherries on top makes it more inviting. I just can't wait to have more of this new sensation.

Aside from this White mouth watering news, Red Ribbon has a new set of pastries and dishes to enjoy.
My son fell in love with their Ube Mamon first time he tried it.
    Spaghetti with Meatballs
This is the best Spaghetti with Meatballs I have ever tasted. It's so gourmet. The meatballs were made out of 100% beef. Everything looks fresh and natural with this dish.
For a hearty morning, this is perfect. Grilled Ensaimada, scrambled eggs, served with the new Farmer's Ham made of tender lean meat with maple syrup.
    Garlic and Chicken Mushroom
My favorite. There's just something about the flavor that I can't explain and distinguish. So good, it makes me want to eat some more.

Thank God for Red Ribbon! It's the ideal dining place for the family. Not to forget, the love and treasure they give for every occasion we celebrate, for every moment we spend with our families.

    Food Trip Friday--- Filipino Desserts

LECHE FLAN is a rich custard dessert
PALITAW which I bought from a Manang (lady) beside the church. PALITAW is a flat rice cake, drizzled with grated coconut roasted sesame seeds and sugar. Made from sticky rice. Form flat, round pieces then dropped in boiling water. When pieces starts to float, this indicates that they're done.

    Taho

Since childhood, I have been taking this Filipino morning snack. A small cup is not enough. For my son? a tall container is good. Like really good.
Same ingredient behind TOFU, TAHO is a protein-rich food coagulated from an extract of soybeans.
Mixed with arnibal (brown sugar and vanilla syrup). Topped with pearl sago(pearl tapioca). This staple comfort food can be found everywhere in the country and being sold at anytime of the day. If you're in the Philippines, make sure get to taste this sweet delight. One hot cup in the morning, will keep you smiling the whole day.

Food Trip Friday--- My Sweet Tooth

I'm an official Tootsie Roll Kid! I remember buying this candy at a local sari-sari store some time in the 80's, for 2.00 (php). Now its at 55(php) per 100g and 15.00 per stick.
Just recently, a friend gave us the Vanilla flavor. The vanilla flavor if I'm not mistaken, is only available and released every Spring in the U.S.
If you're a Tootsie Roll lover, stock up now!
